Lecturer in Human Evolution

Anthropology Department, Durham University

Durham, UK.

Reference number 2561

Salary: £28,290 - £33,780 per annum

Grade: Grade 7

Contract: Non fixed-term, Full-time

Hours: Nominally 35 hours per week

The Department of Anthropology seeks to appoint a lecturer in Human Evolution and/or Palaeoanthropology from 1st October 2008. This is a non-fixed-term appointment. The department welcomes applications from candidates with appropriate qualifications and backgrounds in evolutionary anthropology, who will make a strong contribution to the department's strategic goals in research, teaching and outreach. Candidates should have research specialisms capable of contributing to our Evolutionary Anthropology Research Group, to include palaeoanthropology and/or human molecular evolution.

The Anthropology Department

The department, rated 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, is one of the leading interdisciplinary departments of Anthropology in the UK. The department has achieved a steep rise in research grant income over the past few years to the present level of approximately £1 million per year. We are also one of the largest Anthropology Departments in the UK, currently with 31 academic staff, 16 research staff and about 70 postgraduate students.

Our four research groups provide the strategic foci for our research:
o Anthropology in Development (AID)
o Evolutionary Anthropology (EARG)
o Medical Anthropology (MARG)
o Public Culture in Theory and Practice (PCTP)

During September 2007, the Department is moving to refurbished accommodation shared with the Archaeology Department, reflecting increasing collaboration between the departments. Research facilities for osteology, molecular genetics, bio-archaeology and informatics are available. The Department teaches on two sites, at Durham City and at Queen's Campus in Stockton, delivering BA programmes in Anthropology, Human Sciences, and Biological Anthropology, and also contributing to joint degree programmes, such as Natural Sciences. Postgraduate taught programmes include a Master's courses in Evolutionary Anthropology. Strong links exist between the Department and the School for Medicine and Health via our joint involvement in the Wolfson Research Institute, the University's flagship programme for co-ordinating health-related research at its Queen's Campus. The University has recently (2006) established an Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) to promote new thinking through intra-, multi- and interdisciplinary research, in which the Department has been heavily involved.
